Behind the Scenes - December 29, 2015 : Linda Yulo's biggest surprise

Behind the Scenes - December 29, 2015 : Linda Yulo's biggest surprise
Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

The expression on her face was priceless. Linda Yulo looked so shocked that tears were welling up in her eyes when she walked into the room and was greeted by loud shouts and cheers of “Happy Birthday” from her friends and loved ones gathered there.

Days before, Linda's kids secretly contacted her close friends, inviting them to a surprise Hawaiian Luau birthday dinner for their mother at Sugarland Hotel in Bacolod City. They were all sworn to secrecy and amazingly, everyone kept their promise. On her birthday, Linda's husband, Emy, and their kids brought her to Sugarland Hotel ostensibly to have a simple family birthday dinner. She walked into the darkened room where everyone waited breathlessly.

Suddenly, pandemonium broke loose when the lights were switched on and everyone laughed over Linda's shocked reaction at seeing all the Hawaiian wahines greeting and hugging her.

It was the happiest, loudest birthday celebration ever with excellent food, upbeat music and the noisiest group of well-wishers ever assembled. Emy Yulo looked so pleased seeing how happy his wife was. There was an impromptu program where guests gave their best performance in singing and dancing, kuno! Even the beauteous Marlene Villasor sang a beautiful Spanish song.

I'm sure Linda would never forget this riotous birthday surprise ever. This just goes to prove how much this wonderful lady is loved by her family and friends. Linda, Happy Birthday!*

The Little Boy With A Big, Big, Heart

The Little Boy With A Big, Big, Heart
Warning : Do not read this without tissue paper or a handkerchief in your hand!

Throughout the last half of 2015 I have been thinking of how to put down in writing this incident which surely had to be chronicled.  Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months.  Now, Christmas has arrived and has set the stage for me to tell the story.

I followed this from July 7 when I read it on Ricky Monfort's Facebook wall.  On that day, Ricky posted that a tragedy had struck their family in the United States.  His Tito Freddie and Tita Maryanne's family, including their grandchildren, were off to visit their Uncle Errol, one hour away from Seattle, Washington.

On the way, the rented van they were riding on was rear-ended and the crash seriously injured their 8-year-old grandson Owen.  Despite several hours of trying to revive him, Owen did not make it.

As the 8-year-old Owen expired, his parents made the decision of donating his organs.  Owen's heart and liver came in time for two needing recipients.  It could be no less than a miracle for those who were to receive them.

In life, Owen was a boy with a big, big heart.  Last year, while watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade on TV, a St. Jude's Hospital commercial came on and his mother, Tami, made a comment that she needed to donate.  Owen turned to his mom and asked, "How much are you going to donate, Mommy?".  His mom said $20. Owen said, "I will donate $20 too"!

What a generous boy!  Thus, it comes as no surprise that even in his passing, Owen gave of himself that others may live.

Owen's mom wrote this a few days after Owen's passing:

"No one else will ever know the strength of my love for you. After all, you're the only one who knows what my heart sounds like from the inside."

At 9:24pm on July 5th, our precious sweet beautiful boy Owen earned his wings and became an angel up in Heaven. Last night, we hugged and kissed him for the last time...until we meet again. To honor his kind, giving and generous soul, Harold and I made the difficult decision to donate his organs. Our amazing little hero saved 2 lives last night with his heart and liver. To save another family from feeling the pain and sadness that we feel is what we needed to start our healing journey.

We are overwhelmed and full of gratitude with the outpouring of love and support from our community. We appreciate all of your phone calls, texts, Facebook posts and messages. We are amazed at the generosity and selflessness of each and every one of you.

We are so proud of our son for everything that he has accomplished in his 8 years of life. We are so blessed and honored to have been chosen to be his parents. Our Gracie Goose, who came out of this tragic accident unscathed, has become such a brave little girl and our "saving grace."

Owen,
Mommy, Daddy and Gracie love you so very much. We will miss you like nobody could imagine. Rest in peace my sweet baby boy. Until we meet again...

Briton who sold Lumpia and Turon passes away in Bacolod

Briton who sold Lumpia and Turon passes away in Bacolod
Bryan Reano, the Briton lumpia and banana turon vendor whose touching story of how he left Paris to be with the love of his life, Rosalinda, passed away in the morning of December 22, 2015. In numerous interviews, Bryan said that the reason why he left his comfortable life in England was really his love for Rosalinda.

Rosalinda needs help for Bryan's burial expenses. His body is now in St. Peter's Chapel in Alijis, Bacolod City. Thank you Bryan, for making a mark in this city. You will be remembered. RIP.

---

Bacolod's own Carla Gomez tells the story this way:

BACOLOD CITY—Two Filipino favorite snacks—“lumpia” and “turon”—have been given a twist by a foreigner who has settled here and are now selling like hot cakes.

Bryan Reano, 61, a British national, and his Filipino girlfriend, Rosalinda Labajo, 58, can sell at least 200 pieces of spicy beef lumpia (native spring rolls) and turon (fried sliced banana rolled in “lumpia” wrapper) in less than two hours in the downtown area and Burgos, 6th and Lacson streets.

“I love selling. I go to shops, the hairdressers’, anywhere to sell. I meet all kinds of people every day. That’s the fun of it,” Reano said, unmindful of the sun’s scorching heat.

Before moving to the Philippines, the Briton worked as a waiter in some of the top restaurants in Paris for 15 years. He met Labajo, then a fish broker at a port in Barangay Catabla, Talisay City, online and fell in love with her.

“She (Labajo) made me laugh so I sold my house, my car and everything I owned and came to the Philippines,” Reano said.

Reano arrived in Negros Occidental province in February 2012. He spent all his money having a good time with Labajo on Boracay Island in Aklan province and at Mambukal Resort in Murcia town, Negros Occidental.

The couple went into the fishing business and bought two motorized bancas. But there were not enough fish to catch in waters off Catabla, also in Negros Occidental, due to pollution, Reano said.

When Reano fell accidentally and broke his left leg, he and his partner had to sell the boats to pay for hospital bills. He had to stay in bed for six months and was not able work for more than a year.

While taking care of him, Labajo thought of making turon to sell at the fish port in Talisay. With only P100, the two started selling turon at P3 apiece and would earn P80 a day.

Reano suggested selling spicy beef lumpia to augment their income. At first, Labajo was hesitant because it might not suit the palate of Negrenses, but Reano was persistent. They sold the lumpia at P20 apiece in the market, and it became a hit.

“In five minutes, it was gone,” Reano said.

What makes the food delicious is the spicy sauce, which some people order for their crispy “pata” (deep-fried pig trotters), omelet and French fries, among other dishes, Labajo said.

In their turon, Reano added sticky rice and homemade fruit jam with the sliced banana. The jam is made from the fruit in season—orange, jackfruit, pineapple or lychee.

Customers love their version of the snack, which the couple sell at P10 apiece.

Reano and Labajo start their day at 3 a.m. to start chopping the ingredients. Their simple division of labor: He cooks while she wraps the turon and lumpia.

It takes five hours for them to finish cooking, Labajo said.

Reano has also come with up lumpia varieties so their customers will not grow tired of their products. These include spicy seafood, chicken curry, Hungarian sausage and spicy beef lumpia. They also sell “siomai” cooked with different herbs along with their turon.

They do not use salt, sugar and monosodium glutamate in their products. “We try to be as organic as we can. The secret is in the spices and herbs we use. It’s magic,” Reano said.

He also makes sure they use very little oil for cooking. They also use lean beef.

If they could find a financier, they would love to open a restaurant in Bacolod. But in the meantime, Reano enjoys what he is doing.

He has no plans of going back to England, especially because he has found Labajo and has made a lot of friends in Negros Occidental. “I’m going to die here in the Philippines,” he said.

He has learned to speak Ilonggo from people he met in the streets. “In the Philippines, wala obra, wala kaon (no work, no eat),” he said.

Labajo sees Reano as a loving, responsible and caring man. If there is one thing she has learned from him, it is never to give up on a relationship no matter the difficulties that they encounter.

Reano said he considered himself lucky being able to find someone like Labajo whom he described as “kind, generous, honest and hardworking.”

“But if you cross her, watch out,” he said.

He hopes to inspire the youth in the Philippines. Anyone can make money if they are willing to work hard, even on the streets.

Behind the Scenes - December 22, 2015 : Garden Club's Christmas Party
Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

The Negros Occidental Garden Club put on a grand show during their Christmas party, held recently at the ballroom of the Bacolod Pavillon Hotel. Weeks before the event, club members had been rehearsing diligently with songs and dances for their own presentation. And all their efforts paid off on the night itself as the audience showered them with cheers and rousing applause.

The scene of the party was absolute enchantment with Christmas decors magically transforming the ballroom into a Christmas wonderland. The club members and guests looked so posh and elegant in their fabulous attires filled with glitz, sparkle and glamour.

The show opened with a processional of past club presidents, incoming officers, guest speaker and finally, NOGC president Carissa Maalat, looking so elegant in her bewitching evening gown. May Hanlon performed the doxology with her interpretive dancing of My Prayer. An inspiring invocation was delivered by PP Fe Remitio while Ilde Guerrero gave the welcome remarks.

Everyone enjoyed the festive buffet dinner of epicurean delights specially prepared for the occasion. A young tenor, Ralph Kalvin Dajao, stole the show with his magnificent voice as he sang beautiful arias which held the audience spellbound.

The club officers were inducted by Wilfred Ramon Peñalosa, Provincial Environment Management Officer of Negros Occidental, who impressed the audience with his speech which made us all realize how important it was to take care of the environment and what a wonderful job the club was doing in this regard.

The presentation of each of the six club groups was brilliant and the audience marveled at the spectacular show the groups presented, complete with fabulous costumes and props. Their performance was worth the thundering applause the audience gave. No wonder Maalat was all smiles as she gave her Christmas message, thanking everyone for their superb performance.

Christmas songs ended the program which was followed by door prizes and exchange gifts. Then, it was dance, dance, dance till you dropped!

You Will Be Proud To Be A Filipino After Watching This

You Will Be Proud To Be A Filipino After Watching This

How the Philippines became a haven that saved 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust

Manuel Quezon, the first president of the Philippine Commonwealth, and a group of Americans that included future U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Freiders, the Jewish-American brothers, became increasingly concerned about the treatment of Jews in Europe during the late 1930s.

"They had a shared view of the world, they were men who understood what was happening in Europe," said Russ Hodge, co-producer of the documentary "Rescue in the Philippines." That documentary was screened in the Philippines with the country's president, Benigno Aquino in attendance last year.

Over poker, the men devised a strategy to bring Jewish refugees to the Philippines.

The Philippines Commonwealth remained under U.S. supervision so it could not accept people who would need public assistance. The refuge committee sought highly skilled professionals such as doctors, mechanics and accountants.

By 1938, a stream of refugees arrived including a rabbi, doctors, chemists and even a conductor, Herbert Zipper, who survived Dachau concentration camp and later became the founder of the Manila Symphony.

Behind the Scenes - December 17, 2015 : What a Smashing WOW Party!
Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

Glamour, glitter and fun were in abundance during the WoW Club celebration of the fourth quarter birthday celebration and Christmas party recently at the Ambience Hall of Pavillon Hotel in Bacolod City.

The party was in full swing by the time Ging2 Puey and I arrived, with the sound of danceable music setting the mood for a delightful evening. The ladies wowed us all with their stunning holiday attire and jovial mood, making the evening so much livelier and festive. Emcee Julie Carbon started the games which had everyone rollicking with laughter. Participants competed fiercely like teenagers to win the beautiful prizes prepared by Baby Bonnin.

By the time the games competition ended, we were all panting to catch our breath from the exertion. Thankfully, dinner was announced and the crowd happily trooped to the buffet where a delectable array of party dishes awaited the hungry group. The birthday celebrators for December were called out front to blow the candles on their huge birthday cake, which was the decadent dessert for the meal.

The ladies wearing the most glamorous gowns were asked to parade before the judges, who chose the six winners: Edith Robillo, Blanche Lemoncito, Viol Caram, Cecile Smith, Mae Hanlon and Dr. Margie Nosce. The ladies sashayed around the room to show off their attire, which stood out among the rest.

After inducting the new members, WoW Club president Prima Pefianco thanked everyone for being so supportive of all the projects of the club. The mood turned wild with upbeat music and the members danced all night till they dropped. What a night!*

I Hope What Happened Last Year Will Not Happen Again This Year

I Hope What Happened Last Year Will Not Happen Again This Year
Screenshot of Rappler's news item last Jan. 2015
My simple blog post for today :  I hope what happened last year wherein my nephews and nieces got stuck in NAIA will not happen again this year.

I sincerely hope that the occurrences and media attention we've seen the past months on our airports are more than enough to raise red flags to the Philippines' most popular air carrier to beef up on staff due to the holidays.  Otherwise, travelers may once again find their sorry selves in a situation wherein their holiday plans may be messed up due to missed flights and excruciating delays.

If one can recall, no less than Lance Gokongwei had to face our legislators early this year due to the mess-up on December 26, 2014.  The Civil Aeronautics Board asked carrier, Cebu Pacific, to explain a lack of counter personnel that led to some passengers being left behind by their flights on that fateful Friday.

Travelers went berzerk not just with the delays but also the switching of assigned gates which were a great inconvenience to the elderly who had to move the entire length of the airport.

Behind the Scenes - December 10, 2015 : She Tangos at 94!
Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

The invitation to the party was intriguing. It looked like a passport with a boarding pass peeping out of the envelope. Inside was an invitation to a “European Tour” of Remedios “Meding” Orola's 94 th birthday celebration at the Grand Ballroom of Sugarland Hotel in Bacolod.

On the night itself, the ballroom was magically transformed by designer Jojo Pastrana into a European-inspired travelogue with huge murals of Paris, London, Vienna, etc. as backdrop for the stage. The centerpiece of each table was a glittering crown adorned with dainty flowers and crystals that glowed with the lights.

Nat King Cole's “Around the World” signaled the grand entrance of the Orola family, greeted by applause from the guests. Suddenly, there she was – birthday celebrator Tia Meding, looking so regal in her elegant gown and silver hair. With a smile and a gentle wave of her hand, she acknowledged the cheers from her friends and admirers.

John Orola welcomed the guests and danced a waltz with his Mom while the other male members of the family awaited their turn. It was a heartwarming sight to see the love that the children have for their mother.

The other children and in-laws offered songs during the program, which was highlighted by a talented local tenor, Nic Tugaff, who sang opera songs ala Luciano Pavarotti.

Dinner was a lavish affair of mouth-watering dishes which everyone enjoyed.

Then it was fun time as the music was too irresistible to resist. Dance aficionados took to the dance floor with a vengeance. Tia Meding showed her love for dancing together with the rest of the Orolas.

What a special night for a special lady. Happy birthday, Tia Meding!*

Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

It was a fun-filled evening when the visiting group of 65 graduating Australian high school students of Swan Christian College, Southern Hills Christian College and Ellenbrook Christian College from Perth, Australia, were entertained with a “MassKara Night” by former congressman John Orola in his sprawling backyard garden at Casa Orola, Bacolod recently.

The students and around 27 teachers from the three schools arrived in Bacolod a week ago as part of their schools' project to render community service and to foster a lasting cultural exchange between the young people of Neg. Occ. and Perth.

While here, they traveled in two big buses to Sagay, Isabela, Cabacungan, Tabao, Valladolid, etc. They painted an orphanage building, learned how to dry fish, cook Filipino food, wash their clothes in the river, harvest sugarcane and so many more activities which was a new and novel experience for them. They also distributed goods to the people in the community who deeply appreciated the kindness of the young people from Australia. Aside from these activities, the group enjoyed their outing at the fabulous Paradiso Resort where the huge swimming pool was so cool and refreshing under the hot sun.

After they got back to Bacolod, the girls had a beauty treatment at Ysabella's Salon in time for the party at Orola's place. It was a first time experience for some of the guests to taste the Filipino delicacy “lechon” (roasted pig), which they ate with rice, pancit and other goodies on the buffet.

Then it was party time when the Zen Band began playing. This is the band that represented the Philippines in the Asia Music Festival, and who wowed the audience with their music. This time, they wowed the young Aussies who rushed to the dance floor and rocked, jumped and gyrated to their hearts' content as they cheered the band on. The mood was electric and, pretty soon, everyone was dancing (even John's 94-year-old mom was grooving like a teenager!)

Wotta night! Mabuhay to the young Aussies from Perth!*

Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

One of the nicest ladies around town just opened another branch of her optical business in Bacolod and her friends and loyal clientele were there to wish her all the luck in the world.

Our good friend, Dr. Rebecca “Dang” Filasol, was greeted with congratulations and good luck on the grand opening of her latest business venture, RG Optical, at the new 888 Chinatown Square Premier Mall of Bacolod. This is in addition to her optical shops in Robinsons and SM Bacolod.

Despite the morning hour opening, the place was already filled with her friends from the Wow Ladies Club, the Lions Sampaguita Club, and the Soroptomists. Other guests were Congressman Evelio “Bing” Leonardia, and councilors Em Ang and Caesar Distrito.

Dr. Dang walked in looking like a model in her stylish outfit (one of her latest purchases from her trips abroad?), greeting everyone with beso-beso y abrazo.

Her shop looked trendy with its colorful décor and brand new eye wear in the latest styles for men and women.

The blessing was officiated by Dr. Duds Somcio and everyone looked over the optical shop where a sumptuous merienda was served. The fashionable ladies oohed and aahed over the classic and hip styles of eyewear designed to delight the most discriminating taste. Dr. Dang travels abroad often to keep up with the latest styles in eyewear for her fashionista clients here.

We talked about the amazing success of Dr. Dang's optical shops in various malls in Bacolod and everyone said the secret was her terrific PR. Amen to that!*

Celebrated Indie film director, Brillante Mendoza, held the launch of two latest sensational Indie films, “Taklub” and “Imbisibol” at SM City Bacolod recently.

The Brillante Mendoza film festival and press conference was held at the SMBD main atrium, north wing, and attended by local media, Bacolod's culturati and literati crowd, and film buffs who have seen and admire Brillante's work. The presentation began with pre-show entertainment with music, provided by the Bacolod Youth Cultural Association Rondalla.

The host of the program was popular Bacolod talent John Arceo, who informed the audience that Mendoza is the first Asian to win the prestigious Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, for his film “Kinatay”, which film critics abroad regard as an ultra neo-realist.

It was four years ago, also at SM, when we were given the rare opportunity to watch four of Mendoza's critically acclaimed, groundbreaking films: “Manoro”, “Foster Child”, “Kaleldo”, and “Lola”, which are all recipients of international awards. With the very encouraging response from the Bacolod audience, we went on to have special screenings of his new critically-acclaimed films, like “Captive” and “Thy Womb”.

“Taklub” would be very interesting for Negrenses, who also experienced the devastation brought about by super typhoon Yolanda.

Mendoza came for the launch with his lovely wife, Krisma. During the refreshments, Bacolodnons had a chance to hobnob with the guests and were impressed to learn that “Taklub” was screened in the Cannes Film Festival where it won the Ecumenical Jury Prize-Special Mention.*

This year's Garden Show of the Negros Occidental Garden Club was such a joy to behold. Held recently for 12 days at the provincial Capitol in South Road, Bacolod City, the show attracted a huge number of plant lovers, who marveled over the display of lush tropical foliage.

An added joy was the display of exotic orchids blooming in splashes of vibrant colors and various shades of pink, fuchsia, violet, mauve and lavender.

The show opened with a mass at the site, followed by the cutting of ribbon by special guests, Dr. Marilyn Marañon, Josefa Puentevella, Elsa Leonardia and Tita Nena de Leon. The members of the Garden Club, led by president Carrissa Ma-alat, looked so dainty and feminine in their Filipiniana attire.

An added attraction was the participation of the Garden Club members from Antique, Pavia and Iloilo. After viewing the fabulous array of lush green plants and colorful flowers, everyone trooped to the Pavillon Hotel for the sumptuous fellowship luncheon.

Bacolod is truly a city of plant enthusiasts, who flocked daily to the garden show to enjoy the serene ambiance of God's green creations, while showing great interest in the exhibits and even buying a number of plants to bring home, or to give away as gifts for friends and loved ones.

As in previous NOGC garden shows, the show this year featured a raffle draw where cash prizes and exotic plants were won by lucky winners. Kudos to the club's tireless members who worked so hard to make this year's garden show an event to remember.*

How My Nephew Foiled An Attempt By The Laglag Bala Hoodlums

How My Nephew Foiled An Attempt By The Laglag Bala Hoodlums
This thing is really getting out of hand.  Laglag Bala as it's commonly called has to be brought out in the open.  So here's the account of my nephew JD who related how he foiled an attempt by the coddled tulisanes at the NAIA 3 to turn him into their next Laglag Bala victim.

JD tells us, "I just remembered my pre-departure experience last September 25, 2015.  I just flew in from Hong Kong en route to Bacolod.  I had three (3) bags.  Two (2) for check in and one back pack for my hand carry which has my laptop.  During the final security check, an elderly lady clad with the airport police uniform was claiming that my back pack has a "bullet".  She was rescanning my bag for three times. and kept on saying "may bala (there is a bullet)".  I knew something was not right.  So I approached the monitor.  I asked, "Where?".  Making sure that she hears the tone of my voice being sarcastic and near snapping (try talking to me after a red-eye flight and airport transfer from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2, then you would understand why I have such short patience for shenanigans).  She pointed the metal looking strand (which was colored brownish to orangeish on her monitor).  I looked at her and told her "Get me somebody who knows how to identify if that is a bullet or not. But do not dare open my bag".

An elderly man (quite in his early 50s) approached me.  Without batting an eye I asked him, "Can anybody give me somebody who can identify if that is a bullet without opening my bag?".  Instead of contesting my request he told the lady, "Di yan bala. Mahirap pabuksan yan. (That is not a bullet and it's hard to get the bag opened)".  He delivered the lines with a matching "kindat" (sly wink) to the lady.  Apparently the lady just asked for an apology from me.  "Sorry sir, akala ko kasi bala (I thought it was a bullet)".  I was too tired to answer back and just picked up my bag and proceeded to my boarding gate.  I have just let it pass.  But after reading all the "laglag bala gang" incidents and helpless people getting sacked because of it, I FEEL THE FRUSTRATIONS OF EVERY FILIPINO. SOMEBODY HAS TO ANSWER FOR ALL OF THESE!

Nonoy JD, just like you and me, we both wonder, why is Tourism Secretary Mon Jimenez so silent about what directly affects his efforts?

It certainly was a full week for us. The highlight was the 2 nd Negros Press Club Media Excellence and Rotary Club of Bacolod East Media Lifetime Achievement Awards held at the Social Hall, Provincial Capitol, Bacolod City.

The elegant social hall of the provincial Capitol was bathed in lights and the place was buzzing with guests in their formal attire, greeting old friends from way back when. Laughter filled the hall as stories about the good old days flew fast and furious among the naughty guys with their risqué jokes. There is never a dull moment when media folk get together. There was a touch of glamour with the appearance of the MassKara beauty queens Kennyveb Casabuena and Sam Gergiana Yu.

Ian de Ramos, the emcee of the evening, kept the program lively and fast-paced as he introduced the speakers and guests. There were cheers and applause as the awardees went up the stage to receive their awards. Gorgeous Yasmin Pascual Dormido couldn't help shedding a few tears as she remembered her Lolo the late media man Ramon dela Luna, who inspired her in her career.

Former media man Pete Rivera, who is now a Canadian resident, left the audience in stitches as he gave a long speech about his experience as a media personality in Bacolod. Elsie Jolingan, also an awardee, had to cut him off. My good friend Bing Ascalon and I reminisced about the days when we were so active in the local media. And now, to receive this award, was certainly meaningful for us both. Thank you to the Rotary Club of Bacolod East and the Negros Press Club for giving this recognition.*

“She's so much prettier in person!” whispered the people who were able to come close to famous TV personality, Korina Sanchez Roxas, wife of presidential candidate Mar Roxas.

Korina was in Bacolod to deliver Mar's speech during the City's Charter Day program, held at SMX. She explained that Mar couldn't come to deliver his speech as he had to rush to the victims of typhoon Lando, who needed immediate assistance.

Up close, Korina is smaller than she appears on TV and her features are softer and lovelier. Clad in a simple black and white outfit, her hair tied back in a pony tail with light make-up on her face, she looked so much younger than her real age. Earlier that afternoon, she made an appearance and spoke briefly before a big crowd at the SM atrium for the MassKara healthy baby contest, where the South African Ambassador Marthinus Nicolaas Slabber and his wife, Sumarie, were the special guests.

Later that evening, we met her again during the dinner party hosted by Dr. Ver Lacson at his residence for his special guests. We were already having dinner when Korina arrived from a brief meeting with some of their people in Bacolod. Dr. Ver attended to her personally, urging her to partake of the mouthwatering creations that were especially prepared for their gustatory pleasure. We noticed that Korina preferred to have the crunchy delectable salad rather than the calorific dishes on the buffet. (No wonder she has such a slim figure!)

The guests had a terrific time posing for pictures with the lovely Korina. After all, they whispered, “she might be the First Lady one day”!*

For days, our good friend, Ludy Montilla Lacson, was so busy calling up relatives of the Montilla clan to a dinner recently, to welcome Judy Araneta Roxas' sister, Baby Araneta Fores, who wanted to touch base with family members she had not seen in a long while.

Judy wanted to come for dinner but a sudden illness prevented her from travelling, and so Baby came instead.

I remember Baby Fores, whom I first met during a dinner hosted by our dear friend, the late Boy Montilla, at his sprawling garden a few years ago. She struck me as a very charming lady with the warmth and gentility of a typical Negrense. She kept raving about the variety of delectable Ilonggo dishes that filled the buffet table which everyone enjoyed.

The venue this time was the Molasses Function Room of Sugarland Hotel and by seven o'clock, the place was full of Montilla family members from all over. The room was buzzing with excitement as relatives loudly greeted members of their clan - some of whom they haven't seen in ages. You could feel the strong familial bond that held this family together.

Dinner was a mouthwatering array of specially selected dishes designed to delight the most fastidious taste. By the time everyone had his fill, Ludy called on Baby to say something to the clan. Baby spoke in perfect Ilonggo as she greeted members of their family and reminded them to please help their family member, Mar Roxas, in his campaign. It was a brief speech and the audience applauded heartily.

The guests lingered long after dinner, with politics as the main topic all evening. It was interesting seeing how the Montilla family members bonded together. After all, they have the same blood coursing through their veins.*

Behind the Scenes - October 15, 2015 : Still Fabulous at 90!

Behind the Scenes - October 15, 2015 : Still Fabulous at 90!
Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

She stands ramrod straight like a queen with a regal bearing. She has a figure like a young lady of 20, her flawless skin makes her look so many years younger, her impeccable taste in clothes makes her stand out in a crowd. Her aura is the very expression of the vintage charm and gentility of a bygone era.

This is Nena de Leon of Bacolod City, our beautiful grand dame, whom everyone so endearingly calls, “Tita Nena”. Her 90 th birthday celebration was a huge success, with guests dressed to the nines, filling the entire grand ballroom of Bacolod Pavillon Hotel.

The ladies looked stunning in their formal evening wear with their blings glittering under the chandeliers. But the celebrator stole the show with her gorgeous beaded ecru attire, which complemented her alabaster skin to perfection.

Dinner was a fantastic array of superb dishes that made us forget our diets for the evening.

The program was hosted by Pinky Marquez, a singing sensation from Manila, who dazzled the audience with her inimitable classy style. She introduced a fantastic tenor from Manila, Ralph Dajao, who delighted the audience with his brilliant performance. Another guest was the lovely Cathy Melendez, who wowed the crowd with her crystal clear voice. What a show these guest performers gave!

Even the gentlemen in Tita Nena's family entertained the guests with a rousing number. They all danced with the celebrator, who amazed us all with her grace and stamina.

When the ballroom dance music began, the dancing crowd rocked the dance floor swinging, twirling, shaking like their lives depended on it. Wotta night!

Happy birthday, Tita Nena!*

Killing Lindy Locsin

Killing Lindy Locsin
The last time I saw the late National Artist for Architecture, Leandro "Lindy" Locsin was in 1986.  It was at the Maryville Hall of St. Scholastica's Academy in Bacolod where he was playing his heart out in an afternoon mini-concert.  I regret not having brought my Panasonic recorder to immortalize on cassette Lindy's wonderful melodies.  I said to myself, "Oh well, if I can't record his music, there will always be his architecture to admire."

I think I spoke too soon.

Lindy passed away on Nov. 15, 1994.  Nevertheless, twenty years later, there are people killing Lindy Locsin.  No, not the National Artist himself.  I'm obviously referring to the diminishing body of work.

The Manadarin Oriental Manila, the Benguet Center, The Hotel InterContinental Manila, were all creations of Leandro V. Locsin.  One is gone, one being demolished and another clearly in the firing line.

The Benguet Center

Sadly, this stately building, The Benguet Center, headquarters of Benguet Mining was demolished last 2011. The property was bought by the “good guys” and they plan to erect 3 twisting buildings in the area.

I remember the time when it was being constructed. Only the San Miguel Corporation was between the old Medical City and the site of Benguet Center. It was made using native araal stone.  Among all the glorious buildings of Leandro Locsin, this is what moves me the most sublime manner.  One has to be a Negrense to feel this.  To see a modern building positioned obliquely and wrapped in stone that only comes from our native island of Negros, is a silent tribute to the what the province can bring.  Araal stone from the sides of the Kanlaon volcano is the reason why the Benguet Center's color was so unique. In form, a mixture of cubism and flowing layers that only Lindy Locsin can imagine.

The remains of the Benguet Center.  Credits to the owner this photo.
It was completed in 1983 and that building represented a vibrant sector in the Philippine economy back then. In fact one of the few vibrant sectors remaining since there was already capital flight by 1983. Only the mining industry and its gold was keeping the country barely afloat. That the building is a testament to the resilience of the Filipino is enough to cherish it. That it is a work of art puts  it as a monument to that spirit is enough to preserve it.

It is now gone and an architect who admired the building so much was reported to have shed tears when he saw the most beloved creation by Locsin himself was being demolished. All we have now are the photos taken when it was still standing.

As for me, whenever I pass by, I cannot help but wonder what monstrosity will stand in its stead.

Mandarin Oriental Manila

The Mandarin Oriental Manila stands at the corner of Paseo de Roxas and Makati Avenue. Its facade no longer has the spotlights at night.  Its lawn has gone from green to brittle brown. No longer will be a hum activity during the Chinese New Year. It is currently being torn down to make way for a new building.

The Mandarin Oriental Manila opened in 1976 just in time for the IMF-WB meeting. But even during its construction, while passing by EDSA, one can see an imposing building being erected.

The Mandarin Oriental Manila was called the “Cultural Center”  of Makati owing to the many and regular cultural activities in the hotel.  Its Chinese New Year celebration was an awaited event, also its Oktoberfest and numerous food festivals.

Personally, the Mandarin Deli is home to one of the best chocolate cakes I have tasted. It was so delicious and so sweet that it gave me a headache whenever I would sink my teeth into it.

The Captain’s Bar was the place where the likes of Kuh Ledesma, Sharon Cuneta, Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano and even Ramon Jacinto performed regularly. Its list of guests included British PM Tony Blair, Neil Armstrong, Tom Cruise, Chuck Norris and Christopher Walken among others.

The Mandarin Oriental Manila also played a part in Philippine History. During the December 1989 coup, the Mandarin was one of the strongpoints of the RAM rebels. In fact, Mandarin not only had celebrities and businessmen as guests but also a battalion of Scout Rangers.  The hotel was one of the three strongpoints by the RAM Rebels and the pockmarks of bullets were visible after that episode.

Mandarin Oriental Manila had its last guest check out on September 2014. The corner is now dark.

The Hotel InterContinental Manila

The Intercon as it was commonly known was the longest operating chain hotel in the Philippines. It opened its doors on April 11, 1969. A lot of people miss the fact that the Intercon was the first 5 star hotel in Makati.  With 332 rooms, its restaurants such as Prince Albert, Bahia and Cafe Jeepney became part of the Makati landscape.  And who could ever forget "Where Else?", where we swung the night away only to have to leave in a jiffy because of the martial law curfew (unless of course you were billeted for the night).  And speaking of martial law, it was within the confines of Jeepney Cafe, where one could make contrary statements and criticisms against the dictatorship with then Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile in hearing distance.

Modest by today’s building standards, it was imposing in 1969. Right across it was the old Rustan’s Department Store, the swankiest department store in the country.

I wonder what it is with Lindy's structures that it figures itself in a coup d'etat.  Another time, it was the 2nd strongpoint of the RAM Rebels during the December 1989 coup attempt that closed down the strategic Makati Business District.  For whatever it's worth, Lindy Locsin's buildings have survived the crossfire of coup d'etats.  Unfortunately, they are all vulnerable to the wrecking ball of "progress".

By December 31, 2015, the Intercon will be closed and will be demolished to make way for another mixed use building complex. Another creation of Lindy Locsin is to be killed, another work of art to be destroyed.

Three works of art. Three monuments to the resilience and best of the Filipino. They say that it is part of progress. But how do we really define progress? Is it just the accumulation of wealth and more money is better? Or is progress to be measured by the ability of a people to construct, erect and preserve the higher aspirations of its people represented by buildings that were created by an artist and participated actively in its development and history? It is time that we decide what is progress and what is retrogression. Once these buildings are gone, they are gone forever and those who remember those buildings will also be gone as mortals.

I can only say in our native tongue, "Ka nugon gid."

Farewell Lindy.

A Bankrupt Memory Bank

A Bankrupt Memory Bank
Tatler PH cover : Imee at 60
(Disclaimer: This story is just about the wayward media and not about Martial Law)

It has been 29 years since they were chased from the palace.  Amid a stream of discoveries regarding the unexplained wealth, more than 70,000 imprisoned, poverty level at 42% and thousands tortured and “salvaged”.

And now, instead of justice the son would utter that there was nothing to be sorry for those days of Martial Law, even peddling the canard that if his father were not ousted, the country would now be at the level of Singapore.

The surprising thing is that almost all of them are now back in elective position with Bongbong Marcos announcing his candidacy for the position of Vice President but with no declared runningmate for President.   It is just like a woman declaring she has a fiancé but does not know who the fiancé is. That is how absurd this country has become.

The Wayward Media

But wait there is more! See the cover of the latest Philippine Tatler.  Imee Marcos the Eldest but has shown no signs of aging.  It’s OK anyway, she has the money to spend for all the upgrades.  The cover says she is 60 but yes, still oooh lalala!

But even those who know the crimes and injustices are ooohhhing and aaahhhing! That there seems a dysfunction in our values system and a national dyslexia  being experienced.  The victims must be turning in their unmarked graves.

In fact, this will go viral since social media will weigh in on this very fast.  There will be consequences.  Maybe not violent and not hardcore. There those who remember and they may get back at Philippine Tatler one way or another.  The Tatler which originated in Britain would not have issued an edition with Eva Braun after 1945.  They knew there would be consequences.  One consequence would be that the high end advertisers would leave Philippine Tatler for Town and Country, Metro or even Lifestyle Asia just to distance them from this faux pas.  I can now see the smiles of Summit Media, One Mega Group, and ABS-CBN Publishing.  Even BusinessWorld's High Life stands to win.

Perhaps, there was a lapse in judgment by the E-I-C of Philippine Tatler. A concussion caused by a helicopter crash is enough reason for this absurdity.  Any which way, Philippine Tatler takes a hit with this one.  Maybe this is what caused for the Memory Bank to get Bankrupt.

Behind the Scenes - October 8, 2015 : Mely's Garden is Back!

Behind the Scenes - October 8, 2015 : Mely's Garden is Back!
Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

It was good news to fans of Mely Gonzales, when she informed them that her Mely's Garden Restaurant is back to its original location at 6 th Street, Bacolod City.

And so on a late afternoon recently, a big group of her friends and admirers trooped to the familiar favorite Mely's Garden with its Balinese-style décor. The soft re-opening was soon packed with her friends from the Negros Occidental Garden Club, the Wow Club, members of the Bacolod social scene and a big number of her loyal clientele, who had long been waiting for her return.

Mely welcomed everyone with her warm embrace and gracious smile. To some, it felt like a homecoming of sorts, seeing old friends and fellow food lovers celebrating a cultural fare of Filipino gastronomy.

The long buffet table, located strategically at the center of the room, beckoned invitingly with a cuisine that was designed to treat our taste buds to an explosion of exciting delectable flavors. My personal favorite was Mely's special dinuguan – the best I've ever tasted, which had me going back for seconds. It was obvious that each guest had a personal favorite among the Filipino dishes that perfectly fits our Bacolod laidback lifestyle.

The chica-chica after the sumptuous merienda cena lasted a long while which is not surprising in our usual get-togethers. We love to talk as much as we love to eat! Kudos to Mely for the re-opening of her Mely's Garden! See you there. *

Behind the Scenes - October 1, 2015 : Dr. Ver's Grand Birthday Bash

Behind the Scenes - October 1, 2015 : Dr. Ver's Grand Birthday Bash
Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

It was a special day for Dr. Ver Lacson, when his loving sister, Cora Duterte, arrived from Davao to help him celebrate his birthday recently. On the day itself, the house was all lit up to welcome the guests. The party was in full swing when we arrived with my friends Robert Harland and Ditas Montilla.

Special guests were former actor Mandy Ochoa and businessman Stefan Mead from LA. The tables gleamed from the silverware and crystal glasses arranged so delicately, with the china on each table highlighted by objects d'art as dazzling center pieces. Thirteen giant Christmas trees adorned each corner, bringing a festive air to the occasion.

As usual, dinner was lavish, stylish and luscious. Cora prepared her famous super yummy pasta carbonara (a special recipe from her friend, an Italian chef), which had the guests coming for seconds (third or fourths?). Robert and I gorged ourselves on the grilled prawns bathed in lemon butter sauce which were succulent to the last bite. Nene Rojas savored the delectable Spanish dish, callos, which everyone washed down with the exquisite red wine that he brought from his own private collection.

After the guests sang Happy Birthday, Dr. Ver expressed his deep appreciation to everyone who came to celebrate the day with him. He was teary-eyed thanking his friend, John Orola, who has been there through thick and thin.

Everyone lingered over the after-dinner conversation, which was full of politics and the latest burning issues of the day. What a delightful evening it was, full of good food, excellent company, and gracious living.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Ver!*

Behind the Scenes - September 24, 2015 : When Sunshine Boys Have Fun

Behind the Scenes - September 24, 2015 : When Sunshine Boys Have Fun
Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

Visitors to Bacolod are amazed at our unique Sunshine Boys Club. This was told to me by a gentleman from Manila, whom I met during the joint birthday celebration of the Sunshine Boys, held recently at the Bacolod Pavillon Hotel.

He was so impressed by the vitality of the club members, who have managed to retain their youthful charms despite their advancing years. He was even more impressed when he saw the “boys” dancing with vim and vigor most of the night. “Wow”, he said, “how do they manage to stay so young and active?”

The party was in full swing as the birthday celebrators, Dr. Ricardo Yanson, Pompeyo Querubin, Drs. Serafin Jimenea Jr., Ed Mercado and Johnny Villahermosa, and Milquiades Benedicto were serenaded with the Happy Birthday song by the guests, composed of their family and friends. The evening's emcee, Monet Rojas, kept us all in stitches with his witty comments and naughty jokes. How can anyone feel old with such delightful company as this?

Dinner was a sumptuous feast of everyone's favorite dishes, washed down with excellent red wine that helped set the mood for a fun evening. The music provided by the band evoked memories of bygone days, with old favorites such as “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing”, “La Vie En Rose”, etc. The mood suddenly quickened with ballroom dancing music which had the crowd swinging, boogieing, and reggaeing in between the raffle, which gave away cash prizes, from P1,000 to P10,000, to the lucky winners. Too bad Ninfa and I had already left when our names were called out as winners. Better luck next time.

Kudos to the Sunshine Boys for a super fun party!*
