LOOK : Three Grandmas Smoke Weed for the First Time

Washington state, where cannabis is legal, is now offering adults a relaxing new incentive for those who are anxious about getting the COVID-19 vaccine — marijuana joints.

The program, launched by the state's Liquor and Cannabis Board and named "Joints for Jabs," runs until July 12 and allows state-licensed dispensaries to give qualifying customers one pre-rolled joint at an in-store vaccination clinic.

Eligible participants must be 21 years old or older and have to have received their first or second dose during that visit.

This is only the latest among Washington's abundant vaccination incentives, which include free tickets to sports events and a lottery totaling up to $1 million. Just a few weeks ago, the Liquor and Cannabis Board announced an incentive that allows breweries, wineries, and restaurants to offer free drinks to vaccinated adults.

Washington's newest promotion reflects a multitude of unique vaccination incentives being offered across the country, and the state isn't the first to offer weed.

In exchange for proof of vaccination, an Arizona dispensary's "Snax for Vaxx" campaign provides free joints and edibles. In Washington, D.C., cannabis advocacy group D.C. Marijuana Justice distributed joints at vaccination sites on April 20.

Hey Titas in Washington! Have a marijuana joint for taking the jab!

Uh-huh, we heard you! Some Titas de Bacolod based in the Seattle and Shoreline area have had a blast having two kinds of shots! The jab and the joint!

From Twinkling April 29, 2016 : A Woman Nobly Planned

This came from Tita Ninfa Leonardia's column in the Visayan Daily Star, April 20, 2016 .

How many times have I started to write this column since Monday? After starting a sentence, I would stop, start another one, and then another, and finally write something else, something that would not cause tears to fall on the machine, and have me bawling again. I admitted that I was in a terrible stage of denial, because I did not want to write about something that had caused such shock and grief as what I felt Monday night.

My sister Perla and I had just been having our regular medical check-ups, and having to see two doctors in one afternoon had us cooling our heels for a total of almost four hours, including the stop at the pharmacy to get the prescriptions filled. It was while we were on our way to the STAR office that I got a text message from Dr. Ver Lacson, who was in Manila, informing that our dear friend Ivy Visitacion was in a bad state, at the hospital Intensive Care Unit, at that! I immediately wanted to rush to the hospital, but my sister reminded me that we were already late for work, and I had still a lot of articles to edit, as well as my column to write.

That was almost 8 o'clock already, so I realized she was right. But I still planned to go to the hospital, no matter how late we left the office. It was only after a few minutes, I think, when Carla came rushing down looking grim, saying it was John Orola on the phone, and he was afraid to talk to me. What else could I think? It took a long time before either John or I could be coherent enough to talk about what happened. Without words, I understood what his call meant, as we communicated with our sobs and hiccups.

How could either of us believe that Ivy, our glamorous, ever available, intelligent, talented and constant companion at socials, religious activities, club affairs, outings, and all kinds of activities, always glowing, impeccably made up, with not a blonde hair out of place, be gone? How can we stand not being able to call, or get a call from her in the wee hours of the morning when she caught a piece of news on TV she thought we would be interested in? Or some harmless gossip about people we both know?

Although she grew up in Dumaguete and came to Bacolod only later, it seems we have known each other forever. Our careers had parallels, too. While I was involved in the print media, she was in radio. We were two girls trying to get a foot into the field formerly monopolized by men. At about the same time, she became president of the local Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas, while I headed the Negros Press Club. That was why I always got invited to KBP affairs and she to the NPC gatherings.

I left Bacolod to work in Makati and was gone for some six years, but when I returned to Bacolod, I got involved in press affairs again. We were able to renew ties once more, until the time when she gave up her radio work, which was near the time the DAILY STAR was born. For years, I cajoled her into writing for the STAR, but she always said writing was not her forte. I didn't believe her, and persisted, until she gave in. Later she told me how much she enjoyed writing “Behind the Scenes”, and how grateful she was that I “forced” her to write. Soon I noted that she had been giving good advice to radio fans, an asked her if she could do a “Tell Your Tita” column in the paper. It became a hit immediately. Even men would comment on it, and it tickled her.

For the DAILY STAR's 34 th anniversary, she said she could not get up because of severe arthritic pains. I worried about her because she had also told me that her doctor had already called her a “walking time bomb” because of her erratic blood pressure. But, as her son, Pastor Gary, admitted yesterday, his Mom loved to eat. Although we kidded her about her increasing weight, she didn't mind. She was one who could take any teasing with aplomb, but warned us that once she had chased someone down Lacson Street, in front of their studio then, with a kitchen knife! Guess who?

How could one talk or write calmly about such a friend? Her son told me that she had asked him recently to do something she wanted for my brother Bing, of whom she was very protective. Ah, we will miss our regular Saturday dinners at L'Fisher where the waiters already memorize our favorite dishes. Although I know she is now happy with her Saviour, how can we, her friends, not continue to miss this multi-talented woman, and wonderful mother to her children? Dearest Ivy, we will all miss you so!*

Visitors to Bacolod are amazed at our unique Sunshine Boys Club. This was told to me by a gentleman from Manila, whom I met during the joint birthday celebration of the Sunshine Boys, held recently at the Bacolod Pavillon Hotel.

He was so impressed by the vitality of the club members, who have managed to retain their youthful charms despite their advancing years. He was even more impressed when he saw the “boys” dancing with vim and vigor most of the night. “Wow”, he said, “how do they manage to stay so young and active?”

The party was in full swing as the birthday celebrators, Dr. Ricardo Yanson, Pompeyo Querubin, Drs. Serafin Jimenea Jr., Ed Mercado and Johnny Villahermosa, and Milquiades Benedicto were serenaded with the Happy Birthday song by the guests, composed of their family and friends. The evening's emcee, Monet Rojas, kept us all in stitches with his witty comments and naughty jokes. How can anyone feel old with such delightful company as this?

Dinner was a sumptuous feast of everyone's favorite dishes, washed down with excellent red wine that helped set the mood for a fun evening. The music provided by the band evoked memories of bygone days, with old favorites such as “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing”, “La Vie En Rose”, etc. The mood suddenly quickened with ballroom dancing music which had the crowd swinging, boogieing, and reggaeing in between the raffle, which gave away cash prizes, from P1,000 to P10,000, to the lucky winners. Too bad Ninfa and I had already left when our names were called out as winners. Better luck next time.

The third quarter birthday celebration recently of the WoW ladies was another smash hit. The members, who were dressed to the nines, trooped to the Ambience Dancing Hall of Bacolod Pavillon Hotel for an evening of yummy food, exciting fun and ear-splitting laughter.

Seen among the guests were former Ilog vice mayor Mark Vargas, who was busy inviting everyone to his MassKara Fashion Show in October, and socialite Melinda Garcia, whom we haven't seen in ages.

The evening opened with a most thrilling hula hoop game participated in by most of the members who were divided into three teams. The aim was to pass the hula hoop from one member to the other. The team who could finish first won the prize. There were shrieks of laughter as the members squeezed into the hula hoops without letting go of their partners. The excitement got into a feverish high as the last members tried to squeeze into the hoops to win. The third team won by finishing in just over one minute. They were that good.

Dinner was a mouthwatering treat of holiday dishes topped by the ubiquitous crispy lechon donated by a birthday celebrator. The 3 rd quarter birthday celebrators were serenaded with the Happy Birthday song as they blew the candles on their huge birthday cake. We were so full that we could hardly join in the group singing which was quite enjoyable. The highlight of the evening was the ballroom dancing, which had the members swinging, twirling and dipping all over the dance floor all night.

Kudos to WoW prexy Inday Pefianco and special events coordinator Baby Bonnin, assisted by Babes Zola, for a “swellegant”, marvelous evening.*

It was an evening of elegance when the Zonta Club of Bacolod held the induction of officers for 2014-2016 and the new members at the Nature's Village in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, recently.

There was a distinct note of refined taste all throughout the evening. Zontians and guests came in their finest Filipiniana attire, complete with sparkling jewelry, while the men looked dashing in their barongs. The dining hall was bathed in soft light to dramatic effect.

Gleaming cutlery was complemented by dainty napkins while each table had a centerpiece filled with foliage. Each guest was warmly welcomed by the Zontians as they were ushered to their tables. Dinner was absolutely divine. Everyone enjoyed themselves as they savored expertly-crafted dishes especially concocted for the occasion.

The induction of new members was officiated by Dr. Flor Miel of Zonta Club of Cebu II, while the induction and installation of officers was officiated by Elena Chiongbian-Young, also of Zonta Club of Cebu II. Negros Occidental first lady, Dr. Marilyn Marañon, delivered an inspiring acceptance speech after her induction as the new club president, where she revealed her plans and dreams for the club. Her husband, Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., was wildly applauded when he presented her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers after her speech.

The other officers are Suzette Lacson - vice president, Edna Pahilanga - secretary, Carissa Maalat - treasurer, Belen Elizalde - auditor, and Manon Hernaez, Lina Lim, Laniebelle Javelosa and Nina Arceo - directors.

The guest speaker, Chiongbian-Young, impressed the audience with her eloquent and enlightening speech on what it means to be a Zontian. Guests commented on how well-organized the entire affair was. Kudos to the organizers for a terrific job. Well done!*

The Ruby Jubilee of the Riverside Nursing Graduating Class ’73 Jan. 29 to Feb. 1 was a most unforgettable reunion with the arrival of class members from USA, Europe and other places in the Philippines.

The organizers abroad, Necoy Lim, Beng Pido, and Lea Agudelo, and their local counterparts, led by Lourdes Lobaton, left no stone unturned to ensure the success of their much-awaited reunion.

January 29 was the day the members arrived. The scene was complete bedlam as they welcomed their friends with tears of joy, shrieks of recognition and amazement, and spent the day bonding again and touring the old familiar places. A fellowship dinner was enjoyed by all at Ading’s Pala-pala.

The next day, a thanksgiving mass was held at the chapel of their alma mater, Riverside College. It was another day of touring the new landmarks of the city. A sumptuous dinner was held at Aboy’s where they sated themselves with their favorite local delicacies.

The third day highlight was a festive lunch at Manokan Country. In the evening, a riotous Mardi Gras was held at Palmas del Mar, where everyone came in spectacular costumes. What a riot it was! Queen of the Mardi Gras was Yolanda Panes, who looked absolutely fabulous that evening. There was dancing until the wee hours and some members almost passed out from exhaustion.

The Gala Night was the finale of the celebration. This time, everyone came dressed to the nines in their best evening attire complete with bling-bling! After the delicious feast especially prepared for the occasion, Cristina Agudelo Dee, looking drop-dead gorgeous in her stunning gown, gave a touching speech that left the audience misty-eyed. She then entertained the crowd with a beautiful operatic song, followed by a show-stopping Broadway number “So in Love”.

The members paid tribute to their Manay Pamplona, who was their strict but loving “terror matron” during their student years. In response, “Manay” sang to her former students. A video presentation of their old school-day photos elicited screams of horror and delight among the alumni. Then it was time to dance, dance, dance “until you drop”!

Wotta night!

Thank you to you dear friend, Paula Gustilo, for arranging our invitation to this unforgettable reunion. I know the class will treasure the laughter, triumphs and struggles of their student days. Everyone declared that this reunion will stay in their memories forever.*

A group of distinguished ladies of Bacolod recently decided to form a new organization called the “Wow” (Women of Wonder). They decided to invite their likeminded lady friends to join this new project. And so a new dynamic club was formed.

A couple of weeks ago, the launching of the club was held at the luxurious home of Linda Yulo, an active lady of the community with the attendance of almost 100 percent of the invitees. The event was a gathering of women, who turn heads with their style, and draw admiration for their intelligence.

What sets this club apart is the overall friendly, relaxing atmosphere and the freewheeling exchange of ideas in its undemanding style. Some of the ladies called it “stress-free”, which adds to its appeal.

The “host with the most” Linda Yulo delighted the guests with her amazing gastronomic feast fit for a queen. Guests oohed and aahed at the terrific spread of international dishes, which had them going back for seconds. After the sumptuous dinner in the elegant dining room, everyone went to the sprawling basement playroom where they let their hair down in various games that had them rollicking in laughter and delight.

Winners received valuable prizes that they shared with the other members. Dance music was played and they then danced till they dropped.

Bacolod’s “woman of substance”, Inday Pefianco, was elected first president of the Wow Club. She was immediately inducted into office together with the other officers by Judge Lorna Demonteverde.

The objectives and aims of this new club are being formalized by the group. One of their first endeavors was their outreach project at the St. Mary’s Home for the Aged, where they distributed clothes, food and goodies to the delighted recipients.

It's the season of endless parties! The invitations just kept pouring in, creating havoc on our already expanding figure. Omigosh, how did we ever survive it?

One of the loveliest outdoor garden parties we have been to recently, was the Christmas dinner hosted by our dear friends Perla and Bernard Koehn at their classy, newly-renovated residence. Bernard was the picture of a charming host as he greeted the guests at the entrance. Tall and dusky Perla welcomed us with her stylish elegance and grace. This was an international party filled with their fellow expats from the UK, Australia, France, Yugoslavia, Hongkong and the USA.

The tables were laid out with top-of-the-line silverware and China, complementing the fabulous cuisine which everyone savored with gusto. The guests were in a party mood in no time as wine flowed all evening. The after-dinner conversation was brilliant and scintillating as delightful raconteur Boy Montilla, had us all in stitches with his outrageous stories and jokes. Perla and Bernard's dinner parties are always so delightful and this was no exception. What a beautiful evening it was!

Boy Montilla hosted his own holiday dinner party at his turn-of-the-century ancestral home few nights later. As we walked into the foyer, we were greeted by the sounds of music from the second floor! Msgr. Gigi Gaston had brought with him the evening's entertainment - a romantic balladeer named Charles Tan, whose singing style reminded one of Josh Groban or Frank Sinatra. The guests settled down with their glasses of red wine and scrumptious canapés as the romantic mood of the love songs filled the air.

After the mini-concert, we all were pampered with Boy's excellent dinner, specially prepared for the occasion. Sounds of laughter filled the air as jet-setter Edouard Garcia regaled us with his funny stories and comments. It was a most enjoyable evening of good food, vivacious guests and enchanting entertainment. A lovely time was had by all!*
