Behind The Scenes - March 13, 2014 : A Smashing Rotary Convention

Behind the Scenes with Ivy Visitacion

Close to a thousand Rotarians from Negros Occidental, Panay, Zamboanga, and from Rotary clubs of Makati, South Manila and Palawan, trooped to Boracay for their 2014 district convention.

District governor Mark Anthony Ortiz and governor Robert Kuan welcomed the delegates at the Plenary Hall of the Crown Regency Boracay. The whole day was a fast-paced schedule of activities.

In the evening was the most awaited and exciting competition called “Rotary Got Talent”, a dance competition among the six clubs. Each group was given a theme through the drawing of lots. Negros, with the Caribbean theme, was the crowd favorite. The whole production was like a Las Vegas show!

RC Bacolod East Rotarian Joann Visitacion was the mermaid-turned-Marimar, who fell in love with the pirate, Ferdie Caminos of Rotary Club of Escalante, who looked exactly like Johnny Depp with his makeup and costume.

Rotarians and their spouses showed their high level of performances to the tunes of “Under the sea”, “Gimme Gimme”, and “Volare”…Who would have thought that one of the pirates who danced the “Gimme Gimme” was past district governor Biboy Jocson?

One of the waves was PDG Edgar Sy. The maidens, composed of Rotarians from Rotary West and South, led by president Tata Lacson, amazed the crowd with their flowing blue costumes dancing with Marimar. The fishes from Rotary Central, led by their president LuLu Abelido, looked so real and cute in their costumes, it was like watching them dance inside the aquarium! They were the most photographed too!

Jelly fishes from Rotary Bacolod and North were so much fun to watch, while they were running and dancing around "Ariel". The storyline was told in a dance and the audience couldn't stop cheering from start to finish. The group won the P90,000 in cash prize. Their choreographer was Rodney Ascalon.

Bravo and kudos to Rotarians from Negros Occidental who also won a lot of awards.*
